Kigali to Kampala by Car: Route, Border & Time

The Kigali to Kampala drive is one of East Africa’s classic road trips. You leave Rwanda’s green hills, cross the Gatuna/Katuna border, wind through Uganda’s Kabale highlands and arrive in Kampala by evening. This guide covers the route, the distance, how long it really takes, the border crossing, where to stop, and how to rent a car for the journey.

Quick answer: The road distance from Kigali to Kampala is about 500 km. Driving takes roughly 7 hours without stops, but with the border, meals and traffic most travellers should plan for 8 to 10 hours.

The Route, Step by Step

1. Kigali to Gatuna (Rwanda, about 2 hours)
Leave Kigali heading north towards Gatuna on the paved highway. The road is smooth and scenic, with hills, tea fields and small trading centres. Expect speed cameras, so keep to posted limits.

2. The border: Gatuna / Katuna (about 1 to 2 hours)
You leave Rwanda at Gatuna and enter Uganda at Katuna. Details are in the border section below.

3. Katuna to Kabale (Uganda, about 45 minutes)
Uganda’s southwest is known as the “Switzerland of Africa,” with terraced hills and cool mountain air. The road is winding, so drive carefully.

4. Kabale to Mbarara (about 2.5 to 3 hours)
The road passes Ntungamo and drops into cattle country. You can stop in Mbarara for lunch and fuel.

5. Mbarara to Masaka (about 2 to 2.5 hours)
A long, straight stretch. Watch for trucks, speed bumps in trading towns and sudden stops by buses and boda-bodas.

6. Masaka to Kampala (about 2 to 2.5 hours)
You will cross the Equator at Kayabwe, a popular photo stop. Traffic builds quickly the closer you get to Kampala.

Times are estimates and depend on traffic, weather and border queues.

How Long Does It Really Take?

The headline driving time hides several delays:

  • Border procedures: usually 1 to 2 hours, and sometimes more at busy times.
  • Traffic in towns: slow zones in Kabale, Mbarara and Masaka.
  • Trucks: this is the main route for freight, so overtaking takes time and care.
  • Kampala traffic: very heavy at rush hours, roughly 7 to 9 am and 4 to 8 pm.
  • Meal, fuel and toilet stops: allow at least 1 to 1.5 hours in total.

A safe plan: leave Kigali by 6:30 am, cross the border by late morning, have lunch in Mbarara, and reach Kampala before the evening rush.

The Gatuna / Katuna Border Crossing

The main crossing for the trip, and the one used by buses and private cars. Travellers describe it as smooth and fairly efficient.

What to expect

  1. Rwanda exit: show your passport and get an exit stamp at the Rwandan immigration post.
  2. Vehicle clearance: have the car’s papers checked and its exit recorded at the customs office.
  3. Uganda entry: complete immigration and get your entry stamp or visa.
  4. Vehicle entry: process the car at Ugandan customs and make sure insurance is accepted.
  5. Switch sides: you will start driving on the left once you cross.

Tips

  • Arrive mid-morning on a weekday if possible.
  • Keep passports, visas, yellow fever card, vehicle papers and insurance in one folder.
  • Avoid money changers on the street. Withdraw cash in Kabale or Mbarara instead.
  • Do not photograph border posts or officials.

Check conditions before you travel. This border has been closed and reopened in the past because of tensions between the two countries. Confirm the current situation with your rental company or recent news before you set out.

Can You Drive a Rental Car from Kigali to Kampala?

Yes, but you need approval and paperwork from the rental company. Without it, your insurance may not be valid and border officers may stop you. Request this when you first enquire, ideally two to three weeks before the trip.

You have two main options:

Many travellers choose a car with a driver for this route. The driver handles border paperwork and knows Uganda’s roads, and you avoid switching to left-side driving.

Best Vehicle for the Kigali to Kampala Drive

Traveler | Suggested Vehicle

  • Couple/ Solo – Toyota Rav4
  • Family of 4 to 5 – RAV4, Prado or Toyota Vanguard
  • Group of 6 to 12 – Safari van or Nissan Urvan
  • Safari after Kampala – Land cruiser with pop-up roof

The route is paved all the way, so a 4×4 is not required, though the extra comfort and clearance help in rain and on bumpy roadside stretches.

Where to Stop on the Way

  • Kabale: a cool hill town with views and good lunch places. A good overnight stop if you want to split the trip.
  • Lake Bunyonyi: Uganda’s deep, calm lake with islands. Close to Kabale and popular for a night or two.
  • Mbarara: a large town with fuel, banks and restaurants. Famous for roast meat and local Ankole cattle.
  • Lake Mburo National Park: a short detour from the highway, for zebras, impalas and walking safaris.
  • Equator crossing at Kayabwe: a quick photo stop between Masaka and Kampala.

If you want to break the journey into two days, spend the night in Kabale, Lake Bunyonyi or Mbarara.

Driving Rules and Safety Tips

  • Rwanda drives on the right, Uganda on the left. Go slowly for the first stretch after the border.
  • Avoid night driving. Poor lighting, pedestrians, animals and unlit trucks make darkness risky.
  • Respect speed limits. Police use speed guns and checkpoints in Uganda, and Rwanda uses speed cameras. See our guide to speed cameras and fines in Rwanda.
  • Be careful overtaking behind trucks, especially on bends and hills.
  • Watch for speed bumps in trading centres and boda-bodas that stop without warning.
  • Fuel up in larger towns, and fill the tank before the border.
  • Keep your doors locked in slow traffic around Kampala.

Costs to Plan For

  • Car rental: daily rate, plus any cross-border or one-way fee.
  • Fuel: for roughly 500 km, depending on the vehicle.
  • Visa: check what applies to your nationality.
  • Driver costs: if you hire a chauffeur, his daily fee and trip expenses.
  • Meals and stops: including lodging if you split the journey.

Private car 8 to 10 hours High Total
Bus About 8 hours or more Medium Fixed schedule
