Seeing mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park is the reason many travellers come to Rwanda, and it starts with a road trip. The park is only a couple of hours from Kigali, but the early start, winding roads and tight trekking schedule mean transport deserves planning. This guide explains how to get there by car, how long it takes, how to choose between a day trip and an overnight stay, and which vehicle suits the trip.
Quick answer: From Kigali, the park headquarters at Kinigi is about 105 km away, and the drive takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours on paved roads, though some sources quote closer to two hours in good traffic. Gorilla trekking begins with a ranger briefing at around 7:00 am, so most visitors either leave Kigali before 5 am or sleep near the park the night before.

- Musanze (Ruhengeri): the largest town near the park, with fuel stations, banks, restaurants and lodges.
- Musanze to Kinigi: a short stretch of about 15 to 20 minutes to the park headquarters, with the Virunga volcanoes in view on clear days.

Day Trip or Overnight? Which Is Better?
Option 1: Day trip from Kigali
- Departure around 4:30 to 5:00 am. Operators commonly pick guests up as early as 4:30 am.
- You reach the park for the briefing, trek for 2 to 7 hours depending on where the gorillas are, then drive back the same day.
- Best for: travellers with limited time who don’t mind a very long day.
- Downsides: very early start, tiring return drive after trekking, and more risk if the trek runs long.
Option 2: Overnight near the park (recommended)
- Drive to Musanze or Kinigi the afternoon before, have dinner, and sleep well.
- Reach the briefing in the morning with no early-morning highway driving.
- Best for: most visitors, especially first-timers, families and anyone who wants to enjoy the trek.
- Many travellers also use the free afternoon for a cultural visit or the Musanze caves.
If your budget allows, sleeping in the Musanze area makes the trip easier and safer than a 5 am start.
What Happens on Gorilla Trekking Day

- Early arrival at Kinigi headquarters. Expect coffee, a welcome and a registration queue.
- Ranger briefing. Rangers explain the rules and assign you to a gorilla family, often on the same morning. The briefing is normally at 7:00 am, but always check the time on your permit and with your operator.
- Drive to the trailhead. The ranger team may send you in a vehicle to the starting point of your assigned group. A 4×4 helps here, because roads can be rough and muddy.
- The trek. It can last anywhere from 2 to 7 hours, depending on where the family moved overnight.
- Time with the gorillas. The permit gives you a regulated hour with the family.
- Return and drive back. Afterwards, you walk back, receive your certificate and head to your lodge or Kigali.
A gorilla permit costs US$1,500 for international visitors, and it must be booked in advance. Your permit does not include transport, so arrange the car separately.
Which Vehicle Should You Choose?

| Your trip | Suggested vehicle |
|---|---|
| Couple, paved roads, overnight in Musanze | Toyota RAV4 |
| Comfort and mud-ready ground clearance | Land Cruiser Prado |
| Family or small group | Toyota Vanguard or Nissan Urvan |
| Luxury or VIP | Land Cruiser V8 |
| Add Akagera or Nyungwe after the trek | Safari Land Cruiser |
Why a 4×4 often helps: the main road is smooth, but lodge access roads and trailhead tracks can be steep, rutted or slippery after rain. High ground clearance gives you a calmer ride and fewer worries.
Self Drive or Hire a Driver?
Self drive is possible if you:
- Are comfortable with mountain roads and mist
- Plan to sleep in Musanze the night before
- Have booked a lodge with clear directions and secure parking
- Want the flexibility to stop along the way
A driver is recommended if you:
- Are doing a one-day trip with a 4:30 am departure
- Want to nap on the way back after trekking
- Prefer someone else to handle winding roads, parking and the muddy trailhead track
- Want advice from someone who knows the park routine
Many visitors choose a driver for this trip, because trekking is physically demanding and the drive home is long.

Practical Tips for Trek Day
- Pack the night before: hiking boots, long trousers, long sleeves, rain jacket, gloves, hat and a small backpack.
- Carry your permit and passport. You cannot trek without them.
- Bring water and snacks. Lunch isn’t served on the mountain.
- Leave early. The mountain road is quiet at dawn, but rain and fog can slow you down.
- Ask your lodge for a packed breakfast if you must leave before the dining room opens.
- Wear layers. It can be cold in the morning and warm during the hike.
- Tip your rangers, trackers and porters, and consider hiring a porter to help carry your bag.
- Keep your driver’s phone number handy and tell him your expected return time.
The minimum age is 15 years, so confirm who in your group can trek.
Driving Tips for the Musanze Road
- Drive slowly on bends and in mist. Use low beam headlights in fog.
- Expect trucks, motorbikes and cyclists on hills.
- Stay on the right and overtake only when the road is clear.
- Obey speed limits, as cameras are common. See speed cameras and traffic fines in Rwanda.
- Fill the tank in Kigali or Musanze before the trek day.
- Avoid driving after dark outside towns.
Things to Do Around the Park
If you have extra time, combine gorillas with:
- Golden monkey trekking in the same park
- Dian Fossey tomb hike on the slopes of Mount Karisimbi
- Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo for views and canoe trips
- Musanze caves
- Cultural visits with local communities near Kinigi

About 105 km, or roughly two to three hours by road.
Can you do gorilla trekking as a day trip from Kigali?
Yes. Most day trips leave Kigali between 4:30 and 5:00 am, trek in the morning and return in the evening. Overnight stays are more comfortable.
What time does gorilla trekking start in Rwanda?
The ranger briefing is usually early in the morning at Kinigi, around 7:00 am. Confirm the time on your permit.
How much is a gorilla permit?
International visitors currently pay US$1,500 per person. Check the Rwanda Development Board for the latest price.

Can I self drive to Volcanoes National Park?
Yes, if you are comfortable driving in mountains and fog. Many visitors still prefer a driver because of the early start and tiring trek.
Is gorilla permit transport included?
No. The permit covers park entry, the guide and your hour with the gorillas. Transport, lodging and meals are separate.
Where should I stay before trekking?
In Musanze or near Kinigi, so you can reach the briefing without a 4 am drive.
Can I add Lake Kivu or Akagera after the trek?
Yes. We can arrange a one-way trip or a multi-day itinerary. See one-way car rental.
